A fence is the best way to designate the boundaries of your property. A fence also allows you to make your yard feel more like a natural extension of your home, providing you with privacy and security, or a fashionable way to show off your landscaping or garden.

Before you decide to purchase a fence however, there are a few things you need to consider:

Why Do You Want a Fence?

Some want a fence to keep their pets in the yard, others just want a fence because they find it aesthetically pleasing. Some folks want a fence because they don’t want to see their neighbor’s yard, or they just want the privacy. Before you decide on your fence and the fencing material, you need to think about what you hope the fence will bring to you.

Be Sure You Know Where Your Property Line Is

When building a fence, you need to know EXACTLY where your property line is, and you need to know the local regulations about setbacks. Otherwise, you run the risk of installing your fence on or to close to your neighbor’s property. Your best bet is to have your plat of survey available during your estimate to ensure accurate pricing and ability to see where your property lines are located.

Make Nice with your Neighbors

Talking to your neighbors about your fence is a great idea. You want to know if they will be bothered by the fence or the construction process.  If you’re sharing the fence, you’ll need to agree on the look and size of the fence. In addition, some neighborhood associations will mandate a certain style, fencing material, and color of fence. The bottom line is that to keep the peace, it’s a good idea to let folks know about your plans.

Utilities

You don’t want to dig up any power lines or pipes that may be buried in your yard. It is the law to contact JULIE for underground locates prior to doing any digging. If you have private buried lines, those will need to be located by a private company as well.

Remove Obstacles

Your proposed fence line may run into other things in your yard, such as boulders, tree stumps, existing landscaping features, etc. You’ll need to move these or adjust your fence line. Your salesperson will be able to evaluate what may be in the way and work with you to discuss your options to avoid and/or move obstacles.
