Installing a new seems simple enough, doesn’t it? In truth, there’s a lot to consider when deciding on the fence that best meets your needs and fits your yard. First, you’ll need to determine whether a permit is necessary before you put in a fence, and exactly where your property lines fall. Then, too, you’ll need to make sure there are no underground utility lines that might interfere with your fence’s installation. Once you’re ready to put in the fence, though, which fence should you buy? It’s best to take your time choosing the right fence and think about why you need it.

You might need a fence for privacy. For maximum privacy, choose a fence designed without spaces between the boards. Of course, you can also choose a closely spaced lattice if you plan to combine it with lush climbing plants. Base the height of your new fence on the slope of your yard and your neighbors’ yards, taking into account any applicable building codes. If you don’t need the security of a gate, you can always install offset fences to give you a path while still blocking others from seeing in, and if you don’t want a tall fence all the way around your yard, you can choose a stair-step design that only puts taller fence sections where you need them.
A new fence may be a good way to block the wind. If you’re just trying to keep the breeze away from a seating area, your fence doesn’t need to be especially tall. If you only want protection from the wind and not privacy, you may want to go with glass.
Security may be your top priority. If that’s the case, go for a fence that’s at least eight feet tall, with a sturdy gate that locks. Skip the horizontal rails on the outside, because those can make a fence easier to climb.
You may be trying to contain your dogs. This can be a tricky proposition, and what you’ll need is largely subjective. If your dogs are small and generally content to hang out in the yard, you can get away with a short fence. For big dogs or jumpers, you’ll need to consider their abilities when determining how high the fence should be. If your dogs are diggers, the fence should be buried at least six inches underground, or you should do some hardscaping along the bottom of it. If your dogs are excitable, you might need a fence that blocks their view of the outside world.
Your new fence might be designed to keep deer out. Deer are good at jumping, so if they’re a problem in your area, you may want to go with a tall privacy fence. You might also consider a hedge along the fence because while deer can jump to heights of about eight feet, they aren’t great at the long jump.
Keeping kids out of the pool may be your primary concern. If this is the case, you have a very specific guideline to follow. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, you need a fence that’s at least 48 inches high, with no more than 1 ¾ inches between pieces and nothing that could provide handholds or footholds for climbing. The gate should also be self-closing and self-latching and should open outward from the pool.
