How to Stop Dogs From Digging Under Your Fence
If you’re like most dog owners, your dog is an important part of your life, and you might even consider your pooch to be a member of your family. One difference between your dog and other family members, however, is that the humans in your family are probably much less likely to tunnel out of your backyard and run wild through the streets. Because one of the benefits of having a fenced-in back yard is that you can let your dogs have some freedom to run, it’s extremely frustrating when a dog pushes the limits of that freedom and escapes the boundaries of your fence. What can you do to prevent this from happening? You do have a few good options to keep your dogs confined to your yard.
- Foil their fun with rocks and blocks. Dogs will really only dig so deep before they give up, so if you put rocks, bricks, concrete blocks, or even concrete fill under the perimeter of your fence it will impede their progress. Be aware, though, that they can eventually dig under the barrier if they’re persistent enough, so you’ll need to keep an eye on it and periodically fill in the holes. This is a strategy that requires a good bit of work on your part, but the benefit is that the barrier is invisible and you’ll notice before your dogs get all the way through it.
- Take your fence to a deeper level. When you’re having a fence installed, have it extended into the ground by a couple of feet. By doing this, you’ll not only keep your dogs fenced in, but you’ll also increase the fence’s stability.
- Foil your dogs where they like to dig. Most dogs have specific areas where they enjoy digging. Therefore, one of the most inexpensive and simple solutions to your problem may be to drop paving stones or bricks wherever you notice they’re digging the most. Even if this doesn’t totally prevent the digging- they could go to another spot, after all- it may distract your doggy diggers long enough for you to come up with a more permanent solution
- Be aware of your best friend’s boredom. Most dogs dig out of boredom, so you may be able to keep them from digging by giving them something else to do. Add some toys are activities to your yard, to keep your pooches minds and paws occupied.
