No matter where you live, your fence is probably going to take a beating from the weather. Sun, rain, wind, and snow can all take their toll, leaving your fence looking worn and rundown. How can you keep your fence looking fresh and extend its longevity? It largely depends on your type of fence.

  • Vinyl fencing is relatively low maintenance. It’s very durable, but it will still need occasional attention. Whenever seasons change, walk around the yard, examining the entirety of the fence and checking for damage and loose areas and damage to the fence caps, which can be affected by freezing, thawing, and wind. The primary task in maintaining a vinyl fence is cleaning it consistently. You can just rinse it with a hose most of the time, but at least once a year your fence should be wiped down with a gentle household cleaner and a sponge, to prevent staining and the growth of plants, including algae.
  • Wrought iron fences can rust, if not properly tended. It’s important to inspect a wrought iron fence regularly, looking for loose hardware or footings, damage, cracks, and rust. Areas that have begun to rust can be sanded with a fine wire brush, to keep the rust from spreading to other parts of the fence. Cleaning wrought iron gently with a small brush, like a toothbrush, will extend its lifespan. You can protect your wrought iron fence from the elements by applying water repellent or another protective coating, like car wax, and that will help keep rust at bay.
  • Wood fencing requires careful maintenance. It’s vulnerable to rot and insect infestation. To keep up with it, frequently check for broken or rotting panels, loose nails, loose posts, overgrown plants that could be trapping moisture, and general damage. Direct sprinklers away from wood fencing, because the water can cause fence discoloration. If you see water sinking in instead of beading on the surface, it may be time to repaint, re-stain, or reseal your fence.
