Preparing Your Wrought Iron Fence for Winter
Unlike aluminum fences , wrought iron fences are extremely expensive to replace if they have rusted. If you have a wrought iron fence, protect it and you can save yourself a significant amount of money. Read this article for more information on how to prepare your wrought iron fence for the cold, wet winter weather in Chicago.
Cleaning
You should clean your wrought iron fence once a week ideally, or once a month at the very least. To prepare your wrought iron fence for winter, you’ll need to clean it just like you normally do, using soapy water and a rag or sponge. Dry the wrought iron with a towel afterward.
Brushing Existing Rust
Use a wire brush to brush the wrought iron fence. In addition to cleaning any remaining dirt, this also removes rust spots. If you want to speed up the process, use a wire-wheel attachment on your electric drill.
Sand and Prime
Before painting you need to sand the wrought iron fence with medium-grit sandpaper. This removes peeling paint and makes the surface rough for the primer. Wipe the wrought iron surface with a rag to remove paint chips, cover the surrounding area with a protective cloth, and then apply a rust-inhibitive primer.
Metal Paint
After letting the primer cure per the manufacturer’s directions, apply a rust-resistant metal paint. You can buy the paint in liquid or aerosol form. Let the paint dry for at least two hours before touching the fence.
If you are tired of putting up with the maintenance required by your wrought iron fence, go with maintenance-free aluminum fencing. Not only is aluminum attractive, but it is also a better value than wrought iron. Visit Paramount Fence of Chicago online to check out the long-lasting, durable aluminum fencing we offer.
